But I didnt love his novels like I love the novels of Edith Wharton, Thomas Mann, or Arthur C. Clarke. When I read James, I always had the nagging thought that I should be sitting with good posture in a really uncomfortable embroidered heirloom chair, stuffed into an ugly dress, and sipping tea. And did I mention how cool I think his brother, William, was? When I realized, about a quarter of the way through, that I was really hating this example of late Henry James, I decided to keep at it, and finish the story despite everything. Id show that Henry. Why did I hate it? James plunged me so deeply into the minds of his characters that I realized I was following their convoluted thought-patterns and neuroses as though they were in my own head. Where America Began On May 6, 1607 three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery , sailed in search of treasures, among other things. On April 26, 1607 they found The New Land , where they decided to settle in, the settlers named this new land Jamestown in honor of their king, King James the I of England. Jamestown was the first English settlement in America. The site of Jamestown in which the settlers decided to built their colony was a inadequate choice. The area was swampy, saturated with mosquitoes, and the drinking water was impure, Jamestown was a unhealthy and dangerous place to live in. The colony suffered one disaster after another, men where dying do to starvation, disease and fruitless grounds, during the winter of 1609, also known as The Starving Time . the colony used force against the Indians to obtain food and water, they so desperately needed, this caused the Indians to retaliate. Starvation, disease and Indian attacks was too much for the Jamestown settlers to handle, and therefore they decided to abandon the colony and head back to England. On their voyage back to England they came across some ships heading toward Jamestown, these ships had plenty of supplies and merchandise, causing the Jamestown survivors to head back to Jamestown. The new ships where under the leadership of John Smith and Lord De La War. During the early 1600s more then thirty Indian tribes in the area united to form a confederacy under the mighty chief Powhattan, father of the Indian Princess Pocahontas, who was reported to have saved the life of John Smith. Pocahontas later than married one of the Jamestowns colonist, this marriage brought about 8 years of peace between the settlers and the Indians. In 1612, a new type of tobacco leaf was introduce to the colony, by 1617 tobacco was being exported and it became the progress to wealth for many people in the colony, with time, over manufacturing of this tobacco weed damaged the soil. In 1619 several important events occurred, among a few the first representative legislative assembly took place, and the arrival of a Dutch ship with Negroes from Africa occurred. These Negroes, and the many who followed them helped make the colony prosperous. Jamestown was burn to the ground in 1676 due to the Bacons Rebellion, causing Virginia to transferred their capital to Williamsburg by1699. Currently most of the original land of Jamestown has been washed away by the tidal currents, but in 1957 during the celebration of the 350th anniversary on the founding of Jamestown, a historical park was opened about half a mile from the original site of Jamestown, this park not only has created a replica to the scenery of the original Jamestown, by restoring over one hundred original building but by also having people in costumes representing the first settlers and acting out what the life of these first settlers was like. Amazon Evidence: The Teotonio Site The oldest archaeological evidence for manioc domestication is from starches and pollen grains from sites outside the Amazon.  In 2018, archaeologist Jennifer Watling and colleagues reported the presence of manioc phytoliths attached to stone tools at the southwestern Amazon Teotonio site in Brazil very near the Bolivian border. The phytoliths were found in a level of dark earth (terra preta) dated to 6,000 calendar years ago (cal BP), 3,500 years older than any terra preta anywhere else in the Amazon to date. The manioc at Teotonio was found alongside domesticated squash (Cucurbita sp), beans (Phaseolus), and guava (Psidium), indicating that the inhabitants were early horticulturalists in what is becoming recognized as an Amazonian center of domestication. Many cruel things in the world have been carried out in the name of love. Because of that, it s clear to see how not all forms of love are pure. The nature of love is a prominent theme in Till We Have Faces. All of the relationships in this book are unique -- there are no two alike. In every relationship, there is a love factor. Unfortunately, in English, there are no words to distinguish different types of the love being felt. A person can love creatures, reading, and family members, but those are all entirely separate interpretations of the word â€Å"love.† In the book, The Four Loves, Lewis dissects the different forms of love. There are many connections to be made between characters throughout Till We Have Faces and the four different types of love: Storge, Philia, Eros, and Agape. Each of the four loves plays a part in the plot of the story. The first of these loves is storge. Storge, Greek for affection, is the love in which physical features do not have importance. An example would be a love for a family member or close friend (Four Loves 31-32). In Till We Have Faces, Orual -- the narrator and heroine of the novel -- receives love from her younger sister, Psyche. The Fox, a Greek slave and father figure, also loves Orual even though she â€Å"frightens† people with her face (26). The Fox, Orual, and Psyche have a special bond. Psyche and Orual look at the Fox as a father figure because he acts as a â€Å"true grandfather† towards them (21). Ethical dilemmas are presented to humanity often; dilemmas consist of controversial choices, peer pressure, strong opinions of society on both sides, and pull against personal values. However, the knowledge bank that a person has, or is willing to acquire will influence the resolution made. Paul is a young man that has had several accomplishments, including the starting position that he earned by working hard in the weight room and on the field. Although, members of the team have been trying a new performance enhancing drug that has shown remarkable results, is not on the banned drug list yet and does not show up on drug tests. His coach seems to be aware of the use, but has not acknowledged that members of the team may be using it with†¦show more content†¦Secondly in his research Paul found that there could be adverse effects to these drugs that may include: acne, dehydration, headaches, insomnia, hallucinations, arrhythmias, liver dysfunction and at worst; death (Momaya, 2015). Some of the effects will not come until later in life. While reading another study Paul discovers that there are also legal complications if the drug is found out. The study tells that ultimately he could be banned from sports for a lengthy time period (Georgiadis, Papazoglou, 2014). After the research, it arises to Paul that his prevalent dilemma will be whether to follow his beliefs by not using the PEDs; or take them and perchance maintain his position and progress his physical output. Paul believes that if he takes the PEDs that he will gain acceptance on the team by being stronger and better. However, he will be going against his belief that he is at his best with hard work and steady gains. In addition, Paul believes that he could not take the PEDs and maintain his position by improving his time management and workout routine. However, he will not improve at the same rate as his peers, but he will be following his moral values, which will leave him feeling better accomp lished, and from his research, healthier.
